Ideas

Assignment:

Choose 2 pieces of music that are very different. Listen to the 1st piece of music with your eyes closed. After the piece is over, write words down - a stream of consciousness. Repeat the process with the 2nd piece. Cut out all the words and phrases and put them back together in an order that makes sense. Use these words to create a piece of art. Get out of your comfort zone. Challenge yourself to use media that serves your idea rather than what you are used to.

Movement/Style/Genre/Medium: Conceptual Art

My Work

Music: Under My Thumb, Rolling Stones and Symphony #9, Beethoven

Intentions: Under my Thumb got me thinking about the person underneath - the one being obstructed. We know of the existence, but we may not know the face or other identifiable features. This image was a way to meld the identification of the main subject with the existence or soul of the other.

Other notes: I don't do illustrations, and I've literally never done charcoal, so this was a challenge! I decided early on not to try to make this a finished piece, so this is a ‘draft’. I skipped the poem step because I got a strong vision of the fingerprint face from the Stones and a bowler hat (from Clockwork Orange??) from Beethoven. The lines and squiggles above the hat were just me playing with line styles and such - not supposed to be part of the finished image. If I were to work it into a finished piece, I'd up the weight of the face just a bit and try to make it more "fingerprinty". that's a word, right?
