Situation
Assignment:
Make a Detournement (Subvert existing images or ideas in such a way to make a point.) or a Derive (conscientiously engage in new experiences by wandering through an urban environment - then present the positive or negative experiences by creating a collage map of the environment). Bonus: Conceive a piece of graffiti.
Movement/Style/Genre/Medium: Situationism
My Work:
Turn On, Swipe Up, Drop Out
Intentions: I wanted to create a piece of guerilla art that subverted the concept of Social Media by presenting the image of a figure who has become so engaged in his phone that his essence has disappeared from reality. I did this by creating a human form (eventually named ‘Art’) with clothes, but no body…and he seemed oblivious to everything but his phone. I took him to various public locations in Portland, OR and photographed people’s reactions. In actual fact, very few people even noticed Art. Isn’t that just the way it goes…that too few people notice Art?
Other notes: I also took photos of the form in various locations without people - because it looked cool. Oh, and I used Culture Hustle’s Black 4.0 where the base of the neck and wrist would be. Worked like a charm!
